Finlay Carson, member of the Scottish Parliament Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee, recently visited the Stranraer site of major cheese manufacturer, Lactalis, at their Caledonian Cheese factory.
The manufacturer, a major employer in the area, invited Carson to visit the factory, meet recently-appointed Site Director Steve McAuley, and see its new on-site energy generation facility.
The new technology, provided by BasePower, means that the factory will use less energy and reduce carbon emissions, making its cheese production more sustainable.
During the visit Carson was given a tour of the site, met some of the employees working in the factory and discussed future training and investment.
Commenting, Galloway and West Dumfries MSP, Finlay Carson said:
“I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet with Lactalis at their Stranraer site“This is a major employer in the region and I welcome the investment that they are making, which will see the site become more environmentally friendly. These are the kinds of positive steps that we need to see across the country, as major companies recognise their role in protecting our environment for the future.
“This investment also shows an on-going commitment by the manufacturer to produce their world class cheese in Galloway, securing jobs, which is something I very much welcome.”
Steve McAuley, Site Director, Caledonian Cheese, added:
“It was a pleasure to met Finlay and discuss our current investment in training and recruitment. We look forward to working with Finlay in the future to ensure Dumfries and Galloway’s young people can make the most of the opportunities offered by its local businesses.”
Commenting on the new on-site energy generation project, George Fowkes, Director, BasePower said:
